Unknown Studio at Architalx
Unknown Studio’s Claire Agre and the competition-winning Portland Museum of Art Design Team lead the panel “Equity As Design Excellence,” The Final Architalx lecture of the 2023 Season, in Portland, Maine.
Together with Lever Architecture, Akomawt Educational Initiative, and OpenBox, Unknown Studio explored what design, and in particular, Landscape Design, owes to the world when our ambition is equity. Defining Landscape at both the broadest (global), and most personal (individual) scales, Claire spoke about the importance of creating spaces that elicit love, wonder, and care, and in turn, long-range stewardship.
Covering an arc of history from Aristotle’s first articulation of the Tragedy of the Commons in the 4th century BC to the twin social and environmental crises of the 21st century, Claire’s portion explored how landscape architects’ work can pursue equity and excellence. The evening culminated in a provocative discussion about design process and design futures with Chris Newell, Thomas Robinson, Chandra Robinson, Vinay Kumar Mysore, and Jenn Low.
The Architalx lecture series is dedicated to broadening the awareness and understanding of architecture, landscape architecture, and design by sponsoring lectures that foster evocative and creative dialogue within the design community and with the general public. Architalx’s goal is to enrich community by gathering speakers from across the globe to bring world-class ideas and design to Maine.
