Unknown Studio is thrilled to lead the Master Plan for Richmond’s Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden (LGBG).
We are joined by a fantastic client group and team of locally and nationally respected consultants: 3North, Timmons Group, Canopy Strategic Partners, Gorove Slade, SiteWorks, and MBP. This effort will translate the mission and vision identified in LGBG's recent Strategic Plan into physical space and improvements across this 88-acre Piedmont site—asking important questions about legacy, accessibility, sustainability, and community.
Our initial work has delved deeply into the garden’s past and potential: exploring the legacy of plant cultivation pre-European settlement; researching the global plantsmanship knowledge convening in Virginia; and furthering the role of gardens as health and social infrastructure. This Master Plan seeks to reflect narratives of land and people, while also highlighting relevant historical values such as the legacy of garden research and health promoted during Grace Arents' residence at the site.
